Cumberland Glory (60-mins) | Price £19.75 |
“Cumberland Glory” is the story of the railways around Cumberland’s border city of Carlisle. Citadel station witnessed the passing of many trains, among them the “Royal Scot”, “Mid-day Scot” and “Waverley”. Motive power included Princess Coronation Pacifics, Jubilees, Black Fives and Patriots. Railtours brought in locomotives from all the big four companies as well as Scottish preserved engines such as “Glen Douglas” and Caley Single No.123. Gresley A4′s came from the Waverley Route. Kingmoor Shed is visited portraying normal working locomotives and the visitors off of railtours. Its turntable played host to a Western A2 Pacific “Blue Peter” during the period covered in this video which begins in 1962. Branches and main lines radiating from Carlisle are visited, including Silloth and Langholm. There is magnificent action from the Settle and Carlisle line and the West Coast main line over Shap. The transition to diesel traction prior to eventual electrification in 1974 is seen with locomotives such as Class 40s and 50s plus the Royal Train. From heavy freight to 46238 “City of Carlisle” cleaned for football special, from an immaculate “Glen Douglas” to a 9F struggling to Ais Gill, it is all in this story. Much of the film, in both black and white and colour, was shot by local enthusiast Brian Irwin.

Steam in the Fells (60-mins) | Price £19.75 |
This is a second offering of Douglas Haines 16-mm film following on from his highly successful video of the lines south of Birmingham and the Lickey in Volume 27. We turn our attention to the Fells working north from Birmingham and Uttoxeter to reach the Settle & Carlisle line in the early sixties when Jubilee, Royal Scot, A3 and Clan classes worked alongside Crab, 4F, and 8F over the Pennines. Cumbrian steam includes Maryport, the Keswick branch and early days on the Ravenglass line. Shap Incline was always a good location for engines working hard in superb countryside and the last Duchess workings preclude the more usual sightings of 1967 with long freights banked by the Standard 4′s. As with Volume 27, a tripod was used for steadiness of picture and most views are of sufficient length that one does not feel rushed from one sequence to another.

Volume 20
Shap’s Steam Twilight (60-mins) | Price 15 |
The last main line steam on BR bowed out in August 1968 in the North-West. The West Coast Main Line between Crewe and Carlisle became a mecca for enthusiasts in these latter days and George Woods and Colin White have combined their film of the period to produce this video of what it was really like at the last with particular reference to the section between Grayrigg and Shap Summit. We take the viewer on an imaginary journey from Crewe to Shap with lineside views of the principle locations which include Warrington, Wigan, Preston, Garstang, Hest Bank, Carnforth and Tebay. Five locomotive depots are visited to see the engines being serviced. There are some unusual workings to be seen and views of Hest Bank and Dillicar water troughs in some detail. Shap Incline is well covered where locomotives worked particularly hard and a footplate ride on one of the bankers is included. There are eleven different Britannias, ex-LMS Black 5s and 8Fs, Ivatts and Standards including 9Fs and a Jubilee all filmed between 1966 and 1968. The men who worked the line are included showing their problems with run-down engines but game to the last to show what steam could do. No modern day footage has been included in this 60-minute production and the sounds you hear are generally recorded at the time of filming.

Steam Survival (60-mins) | Price £15 |
Colin White has been intensively filming steam from the mid 1960s throughout the UK capturing not only BR steam from most regions, but many early special workings and preserved lines. Fascinating material from the industrial scene as well as a wealth of footage of European and former Eastern Block countries. Originated on Standard 8mm film and transferred to Umatic low band video, expertly sound-tracked, this 1 hour full colour film illustrates the fascination of his work.
Section 1:- (10-mins) – Shap 1967 with steam desperately hanging on, Standard Class 4s being prepared at Tebay as bankers, Stanier 5s and Britannias, all in action including 70033 picking up water at Dillicar troughs, and 46485 with the divisional managers special at Scout Green.
Section 2:- (12-mins) – The Southern in 1966, loco preparation at Nine Elms, turning & coaling. Activity at Waterloo. ECS workings behind 2-6-4 Standard tanks and Bulleids roaring through. Clapham, Raynes Park and New Malden. Several unrebuilds feature and 35014 draws the elegant “Bournemouth Belle” on to its destination.
Section 3:- (20-mins) – A fascinating section of Special Tours mostly on the Southern with 60024 Waterloo-Weymouth, 3442 being prepared at Nine Elms for her stint on SR metals, double-headers include 31639/31411, 31639/33006!, 34057/34102 (both unrebuilt) , 30069/30064. Also 60532 on SR * LMR with 9610/9630 double heading near Wrexham as well as a few others.
Section 4:- (7-mins) – Didcot in 1969 a delightful few minutes watching GWR 0-4-2T 1466 scurrying around the yard even up to the coaling stage. 6106 stretches her legs amongst the now common Class 47’s.
Section 5:- (10-mins) – Corby steam. A glimpse of the hard worked tanks at this now long gone works in Northamptonshire. APCM at Swanscombe follows with tanks 2 & 3 trying hard to stay on the tracks as they transport lime to the kilns. The CEGB Rye House Power Station concludes the section with RSH 0-6-0T doing the shunting.
