The most filmed area of the West Coast Main Line was around TEBAY and the climb to the 916 foot Shap Summit.

This video concentrates on the activity from DILLICAR water troughs in the Lune Valley and over the entire climb to the summit. Detailed shed activity is shown at TEBAY depot with its banking engines of Fowler, Stanier 2-6-4T tanks and Standard Class 4s. The varied traffic along the main line includes passenger, freight and ballast workings.

Filmed from 1964 to 1967, motive power ranges from Coronation Pacifics, Jubillees, Royal Scots and Patriots to the work horse Stanier Black 5s, 8Fs, Standard 9Fs, Britannia Pacifics and Ivatt moguls. The magnificent scenery and very variable weather conditions are well shown at the popular location.All film material is in colour and the film has an extensively research commentary with an authentic sound track.

Along Southern Lines Part 1 (60-mins) Price £19.75

An archive video film of many types of Southern locomotives on various lines of the Southern Region. The South Western Division was the last to survive with steam traction up to the Summer of 1967. There is ample coverage of these lines from Waterloo to Basingstoke during a period from 1960 to 1967.

The South Eastern Division lost most of its steam in 1962 but Folkestone is seen when its harbour branch was still worked by steam traction albeit by Western pannier tanks. In this Division Tonbridge, Westerham, Gravesend, Gillingham and the Allhallows branch are also seen. Lydd to New Romney with the last DMUs. The famous Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch line is also visited.

Many specials in the last days of steam on the Waterloo to Basingstoke line are covered, with visiting Eastern and Scottish locos included.

The usual Bulleid pacifics are seen in quantity alongside Schools, King Arthurs, S15s, moguls and pannier tanks.

Nearly all the material is in colour and the film has an extensively researched commentary with an authentic sound track.

East Midlands Railways (80-mins) Price £19.75

Jim Clemens Collection No.25. JIM CLEMENS filmed the railways of Britain around the system from Scotland to Cornwall. The area covered in this volume just about finishes his travels for it is in an area to the east of the West Coast mainline from NUNEATON to BLETCHLEY. The previous time we were in this area was when he covered the Great Central route and its branches.

In this volume we begin at Nottingham Victoria and work south to LEICESTER. The DESFORD line is seen with a 2F 0-6-0. A steam tour in 1963 covers the route east from NOTTINGHAM on the Great Northern Grantham route to Bottesford and then to Melton Mowbray and Leicester. East again to Seaton, Luffenham and Ashwell.

South to Rugby and onto NORTHAMPTON. The area east of here towards WELLINGBOROUGH and Peterborough was full of industrial stone quarries. The narrow gauge Wellingborough and Kettering systems are covered along with NASSINGTON, EXTON PARK, STOREFIELD, IRCHESTER, SCALDWELL and CORBY.

Returning to Northampton we cover the line south via OLNEY to BEDFORD and HITCHIN. Then BEDFORD to BLETCHLEY. Before returning north to NUNEATON, the LEIGHTON BUZZARD to DUNSTABLE and WOLVERTON to NEWPORT PAGNELL branches are visited. A call once more at RUGBY for Princess Coronations and even the “Duke of Gloucester” passing through a station now heavily rebuilt with so many yards and sidings removed.

There are 22 different classes of steam engine in this volume from Jinty to Pacifics. Eastern steam and even a Western Hall appear. With Industrial engines included, it all adds up to 80-minutes of enjoyable video!

The film has been mastered with an authentic sound-track and researched in detail to give an informative commentary.

Volume 140

Continental Steam Miscellany (60-mins) Price £19.75

Steam in Western Europe in normal service outlasted that on British Railways by some years. This video gives a flavour of what could be seen in use in six countries over the English Channel: FRANCE, SPAIN, PORTUGAL, ITALY, AUSTRIA and WEST GERMANY.

The locomotives were different, being in a number of cases larger than British ones. Wheel arrangements were sometimes not what had been seen in Britain. Eight coupled varieties were also often common. The loading gauges were often more generous and on the Iberian Peninsula the track gauge was wider. Even so, the countries did use narrow gauge quite widely.

Types of locomotive that Britain only experimented with could be seen, such as Franco-Crosti, Giesel-fitted and oil-fired engines. Some locomotives were British built and these could be seen working into the 1970’s for those enthusiasts who ventured abroad to see or film them.

Many of these locomotives can be seen in this video, from the smaller narrow gauge types to Pacifics, Heavy Freight engines, Beyer-Garratts and twelve coupled tank engines. Often spectacular scenery was encountered and winters with snow guaranteed.

Steam Routes Manchester to Crewe (67-mins) Price £19.75

A video featuring the line between MANCHESTER and CREWE. Particular emphasis is on the two places, one a city and the other a railway town. Filmed in the 1960s, steam traction predominates.

MANCHESTER VICTORIA and the nearby MANCHESTER EXCHANGE stations were busy with passenger, freight and parcels traffic. It was at the foot of MILES PLATTING incline where banking often took place. At the summit was NEWTON HEATH shed and a visit is made there.

The line from MANCHESTER PICCADILLY was electrified from 1960 but steam power existed here alongside the new AC electric locomotives. At the northern end, STOCKPORT kept steam until 1968 and as well as the station, EDGELEY shed is visited.

We then travel southwards through CHEADLE HULME, WILMSLOW, GOSTREY and on to CREWE where a wide range of motive power is seen from 1962 to 1968; Princess Coronations, Jubilees, Royal Scots, Crabs and Jinties along with BR Standards, Stanier Black 5s and Stanier 8Fs.

There is much nostalgic archive material used in this video of a past history when steam power could still be seen regularly on British Railways.

Cambrian Coast Route Part 4 (60-mins) Price £19.75

A video covering the last section of the route of the CAMBRIAN COAST EXPRESS from ABERYSTWYTH to PWLLHELI and what could be seen in the area from the 1950s to the 1980s. We cover four narrow gauge railways, the Vale of Rheidol, the Talyllyn, the Welsh Highland (1964) and the Ffestiniog, and two miniature railways, the Fairbourne and Butlins, Pwllheli. We even cover the Aberystwyth Cliff Railway!

The coast route would see steam and diesel motive power but this film is mainly steam with Standard Classes 4MT, Class 2MT, Class 3 2-6-2Ts and Class 4 2-6-4Ts, GWR 43xx 2-6-0s and Manor Class 4-6-0s, Ivatt 2MTs and even Class 4. The picture is completed by the reopening of Barmouth Bridge in 1986 and Electric Electric Class 37s.

There is much truly archive material used in this production recapturing a bygone era of this popular Cardigan Bay coastal area. The lines still survive today so compare the scenes of that era shown here with modern day or witness the efforts made by the preservations to recreate it.

There is an extensively researched commentary with an authentic sound track.

An archive programme of the CREWE to HOLYHEAD route via CHESTER and BANGOR. Filmed from 1960 to 1967 with occasional 1980’s visits from preserved steam locomotives providing a contrast. Motive power is mainly London Midland Region with Western Region at Chester. Branches from the route include BIRKENHEAD via HOOTON, the DYSERTH branch from PRESTATYN, DENBIGH from MOLD and RHYL, BLAEANAU FFESTINIOG and TRAWSFYNDD from LLANDUDNO JUNCTION and the AMLYCH branch.

The PORT PENRHYN slate quarries to BETHESDA and DINORWIC system are also seen with narrow gauge locomotives.

Locations visited include CREWE, CHESTER, SALTNEY JUNCTION, FLINT, TALACRE, RHYL, ABERGELE, LLANDUDNO, LLANDUDNO JUNCTION, BANGOR, MENAI BRIDGE and HOLYHEAD.

Motive power includes Princess Coronations, Royal Scots, Jubilees, Britannias, Black 5s, 8Fs, Standard Classes and early diesels of Class 40 and 47, usually in green livery.

Steam in The Valleys (South Wales Industrial) Part 1 (60-mins) Price £19.75

Some steam lived on in the Welsh Valleys at least ten years after its demise on British Railways.

Starting with some Western Region steam in South Wales and a visit to the scrapyards of Cashmores and Woodhams, there follows a number of visits to industrial steam sites, mainly collieries. These are BRYNLLIW, GRAIG MERTHYR, MAESTEG, PARK TREORCHY, WERN TAWR and MOUNTAIN ASH. A visit is also made to the steel works at LLANELLY.

The industrial locations ranged from the scenic to typical industrial. Hard working engines are seen, some of them now preserved today, including ex-GWR 7754 and 9642.

Along LMS Lines Part 6 (60-mins) Price £19.75

A further look at the West Coast Main Line in our series of videos that covers in detail the route from London Euston northwards to Carlisle and Glasgow.

Carnforth is our centre point before moving out along the Cumbrian Coast to Whitehaven and returning back to Carnforth for another brief encounter with the steam scene around the station and its motive power depot in 1967 and 1968. Then northwards to Oxenholme and the last steam freight on the Windermere branch in 1968. Climbing to Grayrigg for a tantalising glimpse of Tebay and Shap incline that will form the core of our next volume in the series, Part 7.

Mostly filmed from 1966 to 1968, this video shows mainly Black 5s, 8Fs and Standards but is well filmed nevertheless. There are also some “Return to Steam” tours to Grange-over-Sands which are supplemented with a few minutes spent watching LNWR No.790 “Hardwicke” returning to the Cumbrian Coast in 1976 and very rare footage of the last steam hauled TPO from Whitehaven in 1985. Yes, 1985! Excellent memories of lines and views now completely changed since 1968.

Western Steam South of Birmingham (70-mins) Price £19.75

Jim Clemens Collection No.23. A video film of JIM’s travels around BIRMINGHAM and south thereof, eventually reaching SWINDON and onto some Wiltshire branches.
There is coverage of the main line south of Birmingham Snow Hill through Hatton to Leamington. Early film of an SLS 56xx class hauled tour to Henley in Arden. Standard Class 2 hauled normal journey from WOLVERHAMPTON to STOURBRIDGE via Round Oak. Bordesley steam and plenty of SNOW HILL steam scenes. Visit Tyseley shed and just for interest, the 1500 panniers at Coventry Colliery. The North Warwick line is traversed in 1968 by a DMU showing the journey and all the stations in great detail.

South through FENNY COMPTON to BANBURY and a visit to the ironstone quarries there.
In 1963 a visit to SWINDON works with the last King Class 6018. Other visits there show County class and a Clan. A little of the M&SWJR to Swindon Town. The HIGHWORTH branch, Marlborough, Savernake and Calne.

A very varied programme with some rare scenes on which much of the railway was Great Western. Motive power ranges from panniers to Kings, Prairies and Counties.

Scottish Railways Remembered No.3 (60-mins) Price £19.75

A review of the Scottish Region steam scene around the Tay estuary area in the 1960s. This area covers PERTH, DUNDEE, MONTROSE, STIRLING and GLENEAGLES.

Branch lines seen include LIFF, BERVIE, CARMYLLIE, TAYPORT and CRIEFF, seen with normal steam services and some rail tours that visited them.

All the usual motive power of the time is seen including Pacifics of the A2, A4, Britannia and Clan variety. These are backed up by V2, B1, WD, J37, Black 5, Ivatt 2s and Standard types. Shed visits are made to PERTH and DUNDEE depots.

From The Brian Rogers Collection: A further look at British Railways steam traction from 1960 to 1967 filmed by life long enthusiast Dr. Brian Rogers of Worcester.

Over half of the material was filmed on the Western Region where he lived. Wonderful scenes around WORCESTER with Castles, Halls, Granges and many freight types. The Midland route from GLOUCESTER to the LICKEY incline includes a footplate ride on a Bromsgrove banking engine. Visits to OXFORD, DIDCOT and HATTON. A drivers course on the BROMYARD branch. The Golden Valley line through STROUD and the last day on the KEMBLE branch. On to BRISTOL and down the Somerset & Dorset to BOURNEMOUTH WEST.

The Southern Region shows plenty of Bulleid Pacifics at NEW MALDEN, CLAPHAM JUNCTION and in the New Forest. A visit to the ISLE OF WIGHT for 02 tanks in 1965. Southern H Class tanks at TUNBRIDGE WELLS gives more variety. View the long closed lines to ILFRACOMBE and TORRINGTON.The Midland Region at Water Orton and GRAYRIGG. Into Scotland from CARLISLE and a special on the WAVERLEY Route, STIRLING, GLASGOW CENTRAL and the Forth Bridge showing the old car ferry.

Using all archive film taken over many years up to 1980, this film covers the operations on the LONDON TRANSPORT network on rail and road. Metropolitan Railways are seen with steam at Rickmansworth in 1961 taking over from electric locos. Lots of coverage of the LT pannier tanks at NEASDEN, CROXLEY, WATFORD, FARRINGDON and LILLIE BRIDGE. The Metropolitan electric locomotive tours of 1972. Tube trains of ‘Q’ stock, ’38′ stock on the Northern Line and A62 stock on the Epping to Ongar line and others.

Road transport covers trams, trolleybuses in EDMONTON and some ex LT vehicles in Spain. Horse buses back on the London streets in 1979 with their history mixing with a few preserved examples of early motor buses. The RT buses in central London up to the last on Route 62 at BARKING. RLH types in East London and Routemasters including FRM1 at POTTERS BAR. WR. Witness a visit to ALDENHAM WORKS and the skid pan at CHISWICK with an RT. LONDON COUNTRY routes with green RT, RML, RMC and RF. GREEN LINE with RM’s and RP’s around HARLOW. There are all-over advert liveried Routemasters, Silver Jubilee and Shoplinkers examples. RTW’s at NIAGARA FALLS. A very nostalgic period remembered of LONDON TRANSPORT’s history.

Filmed virtually all in excellent colour, with a sound track and informative commentary.
